Welcome from the Chair
Harvey S. Borovetz
On behalf of the faculty, staff, and students of the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the spring 2007 Bioengineering E-newsletter.
In this current e-newsletter we once again provide a sample of the exciting happenings occurring in our classrooms and laboratories. We highlight Professor Michael Sacks’ NIH T32 predoctoral training grant, “Biomechanics in Regenerative Medicine.” In our fall 2006 e-newsletter we highlighted Professor Sanjeev Shroff’s NIH T32 predoctoral training grant, “Cardiovascular Bioengineering.” Our next e-newsletter will feature Professor Alan Russell’s NIH T32 predoctoral training grant, “Cellular Approaches to Tissue Engineering and Regeneration.”

Part 2 of 3: Michael Sacks Awarded Training Grant to Educate Students on Biomechanics in Regenerative Medicine
The University of Pittsburgh Department of Bioengineering has been awarded three NIH T32 grants simultaneously. In a three-part series, we will provide an overview of each award. In our previous issue, we reviewed the training grant of Sanjeev Shroff, professor and McGinnis Chair. In this issue, we review the training grant of Michael Sacks, William Kepler Whiteford Professor.

Student Credits Faculty and Friends as Key to Her Success
“What I’ve enjoyed most about Pitt’s bioengineering department is the privilege of spending the past four years with so many people who I admire and respect.”
Katelyn Lesk, senior bioengineering major
Outstanding Graduate Student Researchers
Graduate students Tim Maul and Scott VanEpps have received F31 grants to research bone marrow-derived progenitor cells and risk factors for atherosclerosis, respectively, under the direction of David Vorp, associate professor of bioengineering and surgery.

Alumnus is Developing Artificial Lung Devices
What Scott Morley likes best about his job is that he is working to provide a real-world solution to a very common health problem: lung disease. Morley (BSBEG ’04) is developing the next generation of artificial lung devices.
Bioengineering to Celebrate 10th Anniversary
The Department of Bioengineering is getting ready to celebrate its 10th birthday—and we want you to join us!
The exact date hasn’t been set yet, but we do know that the anniversary celebration will take place during Homecoming Weekend 2007. Harvey Borovetz, professor and chair, will host a special edition of his infamous “4 a.m. Fun Run” for those who care to join in.
Please contact Billie Bergman ( or 412-383-9713) to preregister for this event and to be put on the official invitation mailing list. You’ll receive an invitation when the exact date is set.
