BMES 2009: Bridging the 3 Rivers of Biology, Engineering and Medicine
The
Department of Bioengineering is undertaking a major initiative as it
hosts Pittsburgh’s first Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) Annual
Meeting. The meeting, which is held in different cities annually, is
expected to draw in a crowd in excess of 2,000 bioengineers from the
academic, industry, and healthcare fields.

Michael Sacks Named First John A. Swanson Chair
Michael
Sacks, professor of bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh, was
named the first incumbent of the John A. Swanson Endowed Chair in
recognition of his outstanding research accomplishments and service to
the bioengineering profession at the national and international level.

Bioengineer Alumnus Works to Repair and Regenerate Dura Following Brain Surgery
As
a product development engineer at Integra Sciences, Dan Hubbard (BSBEG
’02) has received countless accolades for his work with collagen-based
duraplasty products. His focus has been on the development of new
collagen-based duraplasty grafts.

Bioengineering Students Help African Villagers Fish for a Cure to Poverty and Malnutrition
Students
in the Department of Bioengineering are in the planning stages of
helping African villagers in the remote town of Makili, Mali, one of
the world’s poorest nations, with 60% living in poverty, start a fish
farm.
