Welcome to Bioengineering

Harvey Borovetz, Chair.

Congratulations to Dr. Harvey Borovetz. Dr. Borovetz has been designated Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering in recognition of internationally-recognized scholarship and leadership and contribution to the field of bioengineering. Appointment to distinguished professorship is among the highest honors the University bestows upon a faculty member.

Mr. Chris Carruthers and Ms. Jamie Haney have has been selected to receive 2009 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) awards.  Mr. Carruthers is conducting his PhD research in Professor Sacks' lab; Ms. Haney in Professor Shroff's lab.

Congratulations to Dr. Michael Sacks. Professor Sacks has been appointed as the John A. Swanson Endowed Chair in the Swanson School of Engineering. In his letter to Professor Sacks, Provost Maher writes, "Through this appointment (the highest honors accorded to a member of the professorate), we recognize that you have demonstrated eminence in your field that reflects the outstanding contributions that you have made to the discipline, as well as the national and international reputation you have gained for yourself and will continue to achieve at the University of Pittsburgh."

Congratulations to Dr. Steven Little and the Little Lab for their award winning website: http://www.littlelab.pitt.edu. Their website won the Gold Addy Award for the most creative flash website in the Pittsburgh area. The website was created by Wall to Wall Studios.

Professor Federspiel will serve as a member of the Bioengineering, Technology and Surgical Sciences Study Section, Center for Scientific Review (CSR) for the term beginning July 1, 2009 and ending June 30, 2013.

In his letter to meet regarding Professor Federspiel, CSR Director Dr. Toni Scarpa writes, "Study section members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors ... I want to take this opportunity to emphasize the importance of Dr. Federspiel's participation in assuring the quality of the NIH peer review process."

BioE extends our congratulations to Professional Federspiel on this highly prestigious recognition and selection.

Dr. Lance Davidson's NSF proposal entitled, "CAREER: Physical Shaping of Mesenchymal Tissues," has been selected for    funding (beginning July, 2009) through Integrative Organismal Systems (IOS) in the BIO Directorate.

Professor Sacks been selected to receive the Van C. Mow Medal "for contributions in advancing biomechanics of native and engineered heart valve tissues; and leadership in the development of the bioengineering profession, service to its community and inspired guidance of young bioengineers."

The ASME Van C. Mow Medal, established in 2004, is bestowed upon an individual who has made significant contributions to the field of bioengineering through research, education, professional development, leadership in the development of the profession, as a mentor to young bioengineers, and with service to the bioengineering community.

On October 23, Professor Woo received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University Council of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.  In the conferment ceremony, President Chung-Kwong Poon said this honor recognizes the contributions Professor Woo has made to the advancement of musculoskeletal biomechanics and engineering sciences, especially in the area of novel orthopaedic sports medicine and rehabilitation treatments.

"Professor Pat Loughlin has been elected to the 2009 American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Class of Fellows.
The citation on behalf of Professor Loughlin's election as AIMBE Fellow reads:
"For significant contributions in time-varying signal processing and modeling of physiological systems, including human posturalcontrol andanesthetic delivery."Professor Loughlin is the 22nd current Pitt Bioengineering faculty to be elected to AIMBE Fellowship!"

What's Happening

As of July 1 2009, Professor William J. Federspiel will take over the reins as the department’s Graduate Coordinator. The department is extremely grateful to Professor Vorp and the outstanding service he provided as past Graduate Coordinator over the last 8 years. He has certainly left big shoes to fill. Dr Federspiel is a William Kepler Whiteford Professor and is formally joining the Bioengineering Department  as his primary home from the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, where he previously served as Graduate Coordinator from 2000 to 2006. His research interests are in the development of new medical devices to improve patient treatment in critical care medicine. He is Director of the Medical Devices Laboratory in the McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine. Professor Federspiel can be reached at federspielwj@upmc.edu or by contacting his assistant, Jaimie Sullivan, at 412-383-9998.

The Bioengineering graduate program has moved up in the US News rankings from 15th last year to 12th this year and among public institutions from 6th to 4th.

"Professor Michael Sacks will be publishing a textbook entitled, "Biomechanics of Native and Engineered Tissue Systems."
According to the Executive Editor @Springer, "Biomechanics of Native and Engineered Tissue Systems will be printed in four color to put us at an immediate step ahead of the existing texts."
