BIOE 2704 - Fundamentals of Rehabilitation Engineering and Technology I*

Description: SHRS 2704 is a graduate level, 3 credit hr. survey course with both lectures and labs. The course introduces the student to the multiple areas of assistive technology and rehabilitation engineering. This course is a prerequisite for most other courses in rehabilitation science and technology, and it is offered only in the fall term each year.

Course Objectives: The goal is to give the student a broad overview of the principles and provide a basic understanding of assistive technology research and applications in: specialized seating, wheelchair technology, augmentative communication, computer access, transportation safety, home and work site modifications, environmental access, and prosthetics. Issues related to terminology, interdisciplinary communication, consumer empowerment, information resources and service delivery development are also stressed. Most lectures in the above areas are supplemented with hands-on laboratory experiences. The course has been designed for graduate students wishing to simply learn more about the field of rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology, as well as for those needing a foundation for taking more advanced studies in the field. Parts of the course can be modified based on the expressed desires of the class.

Class/Laboratory Schedule: Lectures: Tues. 2:30-4:25 PM, Rm.5073 Forbes Tower; Lab: Friday, 9:00-12:00PM--Rm. 5073, plus posted Lab sites.
