1. Section Chair Joseph Bordogna opened
the meeting at 8:00 p.m. and asked those present to introduce themselves. The
attendance list appears in Appendix A.
2. Winners of the 1998 election of
officers for the Section on Engineering (M) were announced. The terms of office
of the elected individuals start on January 27, 1999.

The proposed changes in Fellow elections for 1999 were
discussed. The principal change is a proposed requirement that a successful
candidate must have at least 4 positive votes and not more than two negative
votes from the Steering Committee. The Steering Committee consists of the
Section Chair, Chair-elect, Retiring Chair, Secretary, and four
members-at-large. The Council at its meeting on January 24, 1999 will consider
the proposal.
4.The following Symposia at the 1999
Annual Meeting were sponsored or co-sponsored by the Section on

5.Discussion of Ideas for Proposed Symposia for
2000
The Chairman called for topics for possible symposia for the
year 2000 at the next AAAS Annual Meeting, which will be held in Washington, DC,
February 17-22, 2000. After considerable discussion it was agreed that the
following topics are to be developed for possible symposia topics:
- Integrative Science and Engineering Education in the
Twenty-First Century. (Agogino)
- Nanotechnology - A Frontier for Integrative
Research. (Bordogna)
- Confluence of Biology and Engineering.
(Smith)
- Architecture for Massively Parallel Processing
Combined with Super Fast Analog Preprocessing. (Anderson)
- Digital Libraries for Science and Engineering
Education. (Agogino)
- National Network for Engineering Earthquake
Simulation (NNEES). Engineering, Geology, and Geography may cosponsor
this.
6. Report by Council Delegate
There was no report from the Council Delegates.
7. Other Business
- The Secretary reported that he requested AAAS Headquarters
to add a link to the Engineering Section web page, almost two months ago.
Thus far there has been no response. The Secretary reported that he
mentioned this at the Section Officers meeting earlier in the day. Action
may be forthcoming.
- Members present noted that several Sections were meeting
simultaneously, and in particular Sections M, O, and G are meeting at the
same time. AAAS Meetings Schedule management will be requested to avoid
meeting conflicts for these three sections in the future.
8. There being no further
business, the meeting was adjourned at 11:00 p.m.
