Work Abroad Opportunities

Students in the Swanson School of Engineering have three options for working abroad: 1) International Cooperative Education (Co-op), 2) International internships, and 3) International Research Opportunities.

International Cooperative Education

The Office of Engineering International Programs partners with the Engineering Cooperative Education Office to develop international co-op opportunities for students. Assistance will be provided by both the Office of Engineering International Programs as well as from the Co-op Office to students who wish to pursue this option. Please contact each office to discuss how to pursue an international cooperative education experience.

International Internship Opportunities

IAESTE

IAESTE United States is a membership organization, of which the University of Pittsburgh is part, dedicated to developing global skills in tomorrow's technical leaders through international exchange, leadership training, global skill development, and technical education. The consortium offers courses created by universities around the country, as well as conferences to benefit its students.

RISE (Research Internships in Science and Engineering)

RISE is a summer internship program in Germany for undergraduate students from the United States, Canada and the UK in the fields of biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences and engineering. It offers unique opportunities for undergraduate students to work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of 1.5 to 3 months during the summer. RISE interns are matched with doctoral students whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. All participants receive stipends from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to help cover living expenses, while partner universities and research institutes provide housing assistance. No previous knowledge of German language is needed (although it is helpful).

Undergraduate Research Abroad

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program in Aachen, Germany

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany offers undergraduate students the chance to conduct their own research project.  While pursuing their projects, students are mentored and supervised by a member of the research staff of the host institute at RWTH Aachen University. The program is 10 weeks in the summer; the first two weeks include intensive German language training. All communication in the research opportunity is carried out in English (so no previous knowledge of German language is required).  Scholarships to cover costs of living in Germany are available to students with a 3.2 GPA or higher.
