Admission Requirements

Chemical Engineering:

For admission to full graduate status, students should have an undergraduate degree in chemical engineering with high academic standing.

Petroleum Engineering:

For admission to full graduate status, students should have an undergraduate degree in engineering or geology, and high academic standing.

Non-traditional Students:

Students from chemistry or from another engineering discipline who desire to pursue a graduate degree in chemical engineering must have a high grade point average and prepare for graduate course work by taking selected undergraduate courses in chemical engineering. See MS and PhD Requirements for Students with Non-chemical Engineering BS Degree. Each case for admission will be evaluated individually, and applications are encouraged.

GRE and TOEFL Requirements

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) - General Test is required of all applicants to the Graduate Program in Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. The "competitive" score range for the GRE quantitative section is 650-800 and 4.5 - 5.5 for the analytical section. Please note: these scores are typical for fellowship recipients, but are not necessarily a minimum requirement for acceptance or fellowships.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be taken if the applicant's native language is not English.  A minimum score of 213 or higher on the TOEFL is required by the University for admission to graduate study.  However, the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering prefers that an applicant have a minimum TOEFL score of 250 for admission.

Transcripts

Applicants are required to submit official, original academic records from each academic institution (undergraduate and/or graduate) attended. In addition, in cases where the grade reports, academic record, examination results, or transcript do not attest to the awarding of a degree or other academic qualification, a certified copy of the original certificate or diploma awarding the degree or qualification must be submitted. Official, original academic credentials, certificates, or diplomas that are issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Personal copies of your records will not be regarded as official.

Tuition and Fees

Current tuition costs and fees may found on the University of Pittsburgh web site.

Financial Aid

While admission to the graduate program does not imply the granting of financial aid, most full-time graduate students are supported. All students who qualify for financial assistance are awarded departmental fellowships. In addition, a select few top students receive supplementary Dean's fellowships.  A separate application for financial aid is not required.  Each application to the graduate program is considered for financial aid during the academic admission review process. Applications for admission and financial aid should be submitted by January 15th for the following fall term.
