We are thrilled you are considering Pitt for your graduate level education and our team is here to help every step of the way! This section is dedicated to providing an overview of our application and admissions process for our online graduate programs. If you are applying for any of our on-campus programs, please visit:

Our standard background requirement for application and acceptance is a graduate of an ABET-accredited engineering program or other technical discipline. Please visit each program’s website for more info. Applicant’s undergrad performance, future academic promise, professional experience, and other engineering preparation will be considered. Applicants may be admitted provisionally until certain deficiencies in either coursework or academic achievement are satisfied.

Many students ask us, “What is my first step in being accepted into an online graduate program at Pitt’s Swanson School of Engineering” so we’ve broken it down in four steps:

STEP 1

– Review and Select your Professional Master’s or Certificate program of interest

STEP 2

Apply Now to begin your application*

STEP 3

Transcripts, Fees, GREs (if applicable), TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo (if applicable)**, and submission of Recommendations, Personal Statement, and other supporting documentation

STEP 4

– Check your account for application status

*Each application will be judged on its own merits. Please note you do not need to complete the application in its entirety in one session. Be sure to save your work before exiting the application site.

**International applicants who completed a degree at a regionally accredited college or university in the United States are not required to submit a TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo score. Students from certain English-speaking countries are also exempt (see https://admissions.pitt.edu/international/toefl-ielts-duolingo/ for a list of exempt countries). Permanent residents are exempt. However, the school reserves the right to ask for TOEFL scores if deemed necessary for the evaluation of the application.
